Young Sugar Maple Tree in Autumn

Sugar Maple Seed Pods |
Birdseye Maple is much beloved by woodturners, carvers, fine
furniture makers, and musical instrument makers (particularly for string
instruments), among other craftspeople.
A durable, hard, dense, and closely grained wood, Birdseye Maple has an average
specific gravity of about 0.72. It carves and turns exceedingly well,
and finishes nicely. Regarding sanding, a word to the wise: Because of
the wood's density and light color, sanding marks can be difficult to
conceal, so extra care should be taken when sanding.
Sugar Maple is native to all of the
following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois,
Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan,
Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York,
North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee,
Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
