Birdseye Maple Information

BIRDSEYE MAPLE FACTS

Birdseye Maple is notable, of course, for the small dark circles, or "eyes," that are embedded in its grain. These brownish dots, which are typically not solid and occur in irregular patterns, are thought to be the starting points of new branches that grew out from the tree's trunk.

Commonly referred to as "Sugar Maple" (due to the sap they produce) or "Rock Maple," Acer saccharum trees grow in various sections of Canada and the United States. Generally considered more durable than other maples, Acer saccharum is a hard maple that often yields woods with exceptional figuring (such as Curly Maple and Birdseye Maple).

Birdseye Maple is much beloved by woodturners, carvers, fine furniture makers, and musical instrument makers (particularly for string instruments), among other craftspeople. A durable, hard, dense, and closely grained wood, Birdseye Maple has an average specific gravity of about 0.72. It carves and turns exceedingly well, and finishes nicely. Regarding sanding, a word to the wise: Because of the wood's density and light color, sanding marks can be difficult to conceal, so extra care should be taken when sanding.

Sugar Maple is native to all of the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

SUGAR MAPLE TIDBITS
A single Sugar Maple tree can produce upward of 12 gallons of sap per year.

Considered the largest of maples, Acer saccharum trees can grow up to 120 feet tall, with trunk diameters measuring up to 3 feet.

Bowling alleys and pins are commonly made from Sugar Maple.
