AUSTRALIAN BANKSIA PODS |

Australian
Banksia Pods |

Banksia Pod Handle |
|
"What the hell are those things?" you may be asking
yourself. Well, despite their other-worldly appearance,
these seed pods make for excellent turning material. They're
popular for making handles, clock bases, and dried flower
vases, among other products. The Banksia tree (Banksia
grandis), which the pods grow on, was originally
discovered by (and named after) the botanist Sir Joseph
Banks, who traveled with Captain James Cook when he
discovered Australia in 1770.
Note: These pods
can create a lot of dust when turned, so good ventilation
and adequate dust protection are essential. Also, the pods
can be quite hard, so sharp tools should be used to work
with them. |
